The Lady Cardinals Volleyball team dropped their opening Southland Conference game, Sept. 21, losing to Northwestern State University 3-0. Lamar’s record is 2-9 (0-1 SLC).

After losing the first two sets 25-18 and 25-7, the Lady Cardinals came out fighting in the third set. The Lady Cardinals gained a lead of 12-9 and 19-17 before the Lady Demons fought back to tie at 20-20. The Lady Demons complete the sweep 25-22.

“We didn’t come out the locker room ready,” Alan Edwards, LU head coach, said. “If we play like we did in the third set, we’ll be OK.”

Lady Cardinal Amy Hollowell had 14 digs and seven kills. Ivette Dims and Tomar Thomas both had nine kills.

“I thought Tomar played well for us,” Edwards said. “Zahria(Scott) came in and had eight digs. Zahria was fantastic. Hailey (Morton) had 29 assists and was setting us up well.”

The Lady Cardinals had 116 total attacks, 33 kills and 47 digs, but they also had 24 errors. The Lady Demons had 13 errors, 40 kills and 51 digs in 104 total attacks.

Northwestern State’s Kathryn Wristen had 30 digs, Channing Burleson had 14 digs and two assists, and Reagan Rogers led everyone with 12 kills.

“We just put too many balls in the net,” Edwards said. “We’re too high when it comes to errors. That is something we definitely need to clean up.”

Lady Cardinals will face-off against Central Arkansas, 0-1 in SLC, Saturday at 1 p.m. in McDonald Gym.
