HPCThe University Press earned five awards at the Houston Press Club’s Lone Star Awards, held June 10 in Rice University’s Grand Hall.

The University Press staff earned second place in the Best Student Newspaper category.

Former staffers Elizabeth Grimm won first place in the Best Sports Story category, “Soccer gets new leader.” Former editor Grant Crawford earned second place in the same category for “A Baseball Lifer.”

Former staffer Kyle Swearingen placed first in the Student Print Photography category for “State Fair returns to Southeast Texas.”

UP managing editor Tim Collins earned second place in the Student News Story category for his election coverage story, “Trump towers over polls.”

The University Press has now won 54 awards for the year, spread across four different contests and nearly 20 students.

Every year the Houston Press Club recognizes Texas’ best. The contest is open to media professionals working in TV, radio, magazines and to all public relations specialists. The awards represent work published in 2016.
